Last week, graphic design student Alie Kouzoukian installed this piece in the art annex at Portland State. Throughout the week, I witnessed her sit there for hours on end, pushing one pin in at a time. Each day, I was amazed by her progress and determination to…
I spent the last week working on a mural in the Art Annex at Portland State University. It was my tribute to the Wieden and Kennedy 12’s “Fail Harder” mural, which I found enormously inspiring when I visited their offices on a Friends of Graphic Design field trip last fall.
The mural was a part of an assignment for my Design Thinking class. My instructor, Nicole Lavelle, had us research someone or something that inspired us in the field of design. She gave us a huge list to begin with, and while I was interested in many people and places on the list, I immediately thought of W+K, and it seemed pretty obvious to me what needed to be done: Order a massive amount of thumbtacks, and get to work!
I ordered 30,000 thumbtacks (Thank you, Internet!), but only ended up using 22,480. I decided to do an update on the W+K wall by choosing rainbow translucent thumbtacks instead of clear, and using a hand lettered script to deliver my message, which is an oversized bad pun, “Push It.”
All told, the entire wall took around 20 hours of my time to install, and I had the help of 11 different people, at various times. It was a wonderful experiment in community, and I am so happy that the PSU Art Department was willing to let me take over one of their walls to make this happen! This is just another reason why I am proud to be a PSU Graphic Design major! If you happen to be in the neighborhood, the mural will be visible at 1990 SW 5th Avenue, beginning this Monday, February 6th.
Also, sending a big thank you to Tina Le for the lovely photos!
